Here is the story from WCTV, a local news station in Tallahassee, FL:
"The pastor of a church in Decatur, Georgia says Marquel Peters, his family and some others in the congregation were there for the late night Thursday, December 31 services when the shooting occurred.
Marquel was sitting in a smaller sanctuary with about 150 other people when someone in the assembly heard a popping sound and saw debris fall from the ceiling.
The child had been struck in the head by the bullet. Marquel's mom held her son in her arms until paramedics arrived.
The youngster was rushed to an area hospital where he later died.
Police say they do not know where the shot came from and are asking for any help or information on the shooting."
The story in and of itself is sad but not incredibly unheard of or remarkable, until you read the comments section: "our prayers are with you and may god bless that young child".
It seems painfully clear to me that if anyone had the power to stop the bullet that killed this poor child, it would be the very same deity that this person prays to. I can even understand praying for the family, but if a caring god exists, it is clear that he/she/it has either abandoned this child capriciously or else smote him outright. It pains me to think of the infinitely small effort that would be required on the part of an omnipotent being to slightly alter the path of the bullet so that it missed the people in the church or even lodged itself in the rafters of the building.
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?” -Epicurus
This story highlighting the Problem of Evil reminds me of one of my favorite posts of all time, which can be found here.
