Police and clergy protected pedophile priests

By Conor O'Clery for globalpost.com

"DUBLIN, Ireland — Police officers, government officials and bishops of the Catholic church in Ireland have been harshly censured in a report on clerical child abuse over three decades in the Archdiocese of Dublin. Coming just a few months after an equally harsh report on the ill-treatment of children in Church-run industrial schools, the latest revelations have shocked Catholics and non-Catholics alike throughout the island.

An official commission investigated 320 allegations against a sample of 46 out of 183 priests from 1975 to 2004. It found that several cardinals and bishops protected criminal priests while taking no action to protect children.

Responding to the report, Ireland’s Justice Minister Dermot Ahern said that “the era where evil people could do so under the cover of the cloth, facilitated and shielded from the consequences by their authorities, while the lives of children were ruined with such cruelty, is over for good.” He added: “The bottom line is this: A collar will protect no criminal.”

In one of the most telling comments, the religious affairs correspondent of Irish national broadcaster RTE said on the main evening news that the report “represents the failure of civil Ireland, in the independent republic of Ireland, to stand up to the royalty of Ireland, the Catholic Church.” Deference to the clergy in this once devoutly Catholic country caused the police to conclude that the crimes of the Catholic Church were outside their remit.

The driving force behind the report is Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, who came from Rome in 2003 to take over the archdiocese and handle the growing scandal.

Yesterday, at a news conference, holding his hand over his heart, and with tears in his eyes, Martin apologized as a man and a bishop. “How do I feel when I have to unveil here before you the revolting stories of the sexual assault and rape of many young children and teenagers by priests of the archdiocese?” he said. “To each and every survivor my apology, my sorrow and shame for what happened.”

The report of the commission found that the protection of pedophile priests was facilitated by “the structures and rules of the Catholic Church.” Government prosecutors and police facilitated the cover-up by allowing the church institutions to be beyond the reach of the normal law enforcement processes. Over the period the welfare of children was not even a factor to be considered. “Instead the focus was on the avoidance of scandal and the preservation of the good name, status and assets of the institution and of what the institution regarded as its most important members — the priests.”"

Blasphemy Friday: Culture War in Pennsylvania

This week's Blasphemy Friday comes at the suggestion of my roommate Brice, who posted this link on my wall the other day.

Here's the story: Chambersburg, PA had a tradition for many years of allowing a local club to erect a nativity scene on a garden on the town square. In order to test the city's bias, PA Nonbelievers, Inc. (PAN) requested to put up a sign saying the following: "Celebrating Solstice — Honoring Atheist War Veterans." When faced with the choice between allowing all seasonal decorations on public property or allowing none, the city chose to remove all decorations from the garden area. The nativity scene will go up across the street on the property of a local Presbyterian church.

Thursdays with Seth #7: The History of Thanksgiving

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
On this glorious holiday, we all need to take a moment to remember how we got here. If we didn't exist, we would have nothing to be thankful for, after all! So let's just sit back and reminisce about the history of America, the country that God likes the most.

GENESIS!
In the beginning, God created America. It was dark, though, and God wanted to see how glorious it was, so he created light. Then he created democracy, freedom, corn, and Native Americans, who existed solely to help the Christians when they arrived in this great land.

THE PILGRIMS
In Europe in 1834, the birthplace of Christianity, there was a buckle-shoed rock band called The Pilgrims. They were the best band on the face of the Earth, but they hadn't been discovered by a large record company yet and were down on their luck. They travelled from pub to pub playing gigs, hoping to pay the rent and utilities so they could keep their water running.

One night, a bearded man was in the audience at one of the pubs. After the show, the bearded man approached the Pilgrims and said unto them, "Sup. I'm Jesus." And a bond of friendship was forged in the fires of heaven. The Pilgrims explained their plight to Jesus, who listened intently. He agreed that they deserved a record deal, as their music kicketh ass, but Jesus did not know anyone who could help. So instead, Jesus called his fiery dragon, Cornelius, and picked up The Pilgrims to take them on the adventure of a lifetime.

They soared through the skies across the Pacific Ocean and landed at Plymouth Rock, Arkansas. God was waiting for them when they arrived. "Sup. I'm God," God said. God then handed the Pilgrims the Ten Commandments and said, "Hey. This is the Ten Commandments, but you can call it The Constitution." God then flew into the air with his rocket boots and landed in Heaven. "Word. I'm out," said Jesus, and he also flew back to Heaven. The Pilgrims were suddenly on their own.

Not knowing what to do, The Pilgrims decided to do what they do best: ROCK THE FUCK OUT. In the midst of the epic chaos, a nearby bush began to rustle.

SQUANTO
The Pilgrims aimed their guitars at the bush and turbo-blasted it with epic jams, and a walrus named Squanto flew out on the wings of glory.

"Sup. I'm Squanto," said the Walrus. Squanto then taught The Pilgrims how to make corn by enslaving people with darker skin and making them do all the work. "Isn't this immoral?" asked The Pilgrims. "Shut the fuck up; I'm Squanto," replied Squanto.

So The Pilgrims made so much corn that they had corn all over the place. They even invented ethanol to save the environment from all of the pollution they created by making ethanol. Pretty soon, all that corn shenanigans caught the attention of King James, the ruler of all of Europe. King James sent The Pilgrims a text message, saying, "Sup. I'm King James. What the fuck, share the corn. Peace."

The Pilgrims were not happy about this, so they replied with a text message of their own. "NO," they said. The text was so assertive that King James's iPhone exploded, blowing off his hand. Like a phoenix, the King James Bible rose from the ashes of King James's iPhone. King James then lashed his stump arm to the King James Bible and used its power to create a Royal Navy, which he sent across the Pacific Ocean to Arkansas. The Pilgrims saw this coming, so they used the power of The Constitution to create an army of Corn People.

THE WAR!
And so the American Revolution began. When the Royal Navy arrived, Paul Revere rode his Harley across the world, shouting, "KING JAMES IS HERE!" This is how The Pilgrims knew where to dispatch their corn people army. The battle was fierce, but The Pilgrims and their army of corn people were ultimately victorious.

When the smoke cleared, God and Jesus looked down from Heaven and saw that their chosen people had won and defended the honor of America. "Yay, this is good," said Jesus. "Ye speaketh correcteth," said God flambouyantly. They then descended from Heaven, God with his Rocket Boots and Jesus with his fire dragon Cornelius, and they said to The Pilgrims, "Let's murder a huge bird and eat it."

And so Thanksgiving was born. As you enjoy your large, murdered bird today, don't just be thankful for what is right there in front of you. Be thankful for the heroic efforts of God, Jesus, Squanto the Walrus, The Pilgrims, and The Corn People Army against the tyranny of King James and his prosthetic Bible hand. Without them, Satan would destroy us all. Amen.

LET'S EAT!

LOL @ Kirk Cameron

Ok so we've all seen this clip of Cameron claiming that if evolution were true, there should be a "crocoduck." Richard Dawkins even has a crocoduck tie (in the spirit of satire, of course). But check this link out! Apparently, they have found several new crocodilian fossils in the Sahara, one of which appears to have a duck-bill shaped snout. I'm not sure if Kirk knows about this yet, but surely when he hears this, he will come to accept evolution as the best current theory explaining life's diversity...right? Don't get your hopes up.

I saw this on MSNBC last night

Sometimes I think Chris Matthews is the Bill O'Reilly of the left, but I loved it when he grilled this bishop on abortion. I think he does a good job of pointing out the fact that although many pro-lifers use the rhetoric of "abortion is murder," few are willing to follow through with "a woman who murders a baby should get 25-life in prison." I think there's some cognitive dissonance there...

Before you give up your change...

Take a moment to read up on what that money is going to support.

Scripture forbids sexual intimacy between members of the same sex. The Salvation Army believes, therefore, that Christians whose sexual orientation is primarily or exclusively same-sex are called upon to embrace celibacy as a way of life. There is no scriptural support for same-sex unions as equal to, or as an alternative to, heterosexual marriage.
We believe that there exists a direct connection between the incidence of addiction and the easy availability of alcoholic beverages and the increasing social acceptance of their consumption. We are, therefore, active in supporting legislation likely to reduce the consumption of alcohol.
Pornography is an increasingly harmful scourge on society, endangering and degrading the physical, moral, and spiritual welfare of all those involved. It is clearly linked with prostitution, sexual abuse and assault, and other forms of sexual exploitation.

American Evangelicals Play Role In Uganda Effort To ‘Wipe Out’ Gays

By Wayne Besen for TruthWinsOut.org

"In March, American anti-gay activists traveled to Uganda for a conference that pledged to “wipe out” homosexuality. Seven months later, a draconian bill has been introduced that pledges to make good on this threat. The “Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009” is so severe that it is designed to shred the spirit and suffocate the soul of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Ugandans. If it passes, Uganda will become a predator state that actively hunts down GLBT people to destroy them.

Uganda already punished gay intimacy with life in prison. But, apparently that was not harsh enough, with this bill penalizing anyone who “attempts to commit the offence” with up to seven years in jail. Additionally, a person charged will be forced to undergo an invasive medical examination to determine their HIV status. If the detainees are found to be HIV+, they may be executed.

This barbaric legislation stifles free speech by threatening anyone who is accused of “promoting” homosexuality with five to seven year prison sentences. Snitching on gay friends and family members is strongly encouraged because “failure to disclose the ‘offence’ within 24 hours of knowledge makes somebody liable to a fine or imprisonment of up to three years.”

Sadly, this witch-hunt has the blood stained fingerprints of leading American evangelicals. The Fellowship, (aka The Family) one of America’s most powerful and secretive fundamentalist organization’s, converted Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni (pictured top) to its anti-gay brand of Christianity, which is the “intellectual” impetus behind the anti-gay crackdown. The clandestine organization’s leader, Doug Coe, calls Museveni The Fellowship’s “key man” in Africa. Jeff Sharlet, author of “The Family”, writes of the African strongman’s conversion:

“So,” Doug Coe told us, “my friend said to the president, ‘why don’t you come and pray with me in America? I have a good group of friends—senators, congressmen—who I like to pray with, and they’d like to pray with you.’ And that president came to the Cedars (a religious retreat), and he met Jesus. And his name is Yoweri Museveni…And he is a good friend of the Family.”

The Family, of course, recently made headlines because one of its key members, Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) had sex with his best friends wife, while they were working together. Another member, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), used one of the Family’s Washington properties to try to broker a deal to buy off the furious husband, who has since gone public with the Ensign scandal."

Full article here.

Jeff Sharlet was recently on the Point of Inquiry podcast, and he had some very interesting things to say about our own Senator Chuck Grassley's involvement with The Family.

Thursdays with Seth #6: Asking Questions

WELCOME!
Welcome to this week's edition of Thursdays with Seth! This week, I, Seth Coster, Finance Director of UNIFI, will engage you, America, in a no-holds barred interrogation. It's time to ask the tough questions... the questions nobody wants to answer. This could get ugly. Don't say I didn't warn you. But first...

LEFT 6 DEAD 3!
Check out this Left 4 Dead 2 commercial. It's amazing. I will definitely spend at least three, possibly even four hours of my Christmas break playing this game.

"They're gonna need more zombies." HOW BADASS IS THAT?

JUST ASKING QUESTIONS!

I'm an inquisitive person. I just naturally ask a lot of questions. And sometimes, because of my nature, I come under scrutiny. Well, let me just say that I will not be silenced by a fascist regime of communist capitalist terrorists anymore. It's time to let it all out. Listen up, America. You're about to be hit by some real truth, based on logic, facts, science, and logic. And facts.

First of all, I need to know something. Is the Vatican, in fact, actually a cover for a large system of underground tunnels that is used for the underground trafficking of refugee Muslim prostitutes who are making their way to Amsterdam to find a better life in which they can legally exploit their own bodies for monetary gain, possibly in exchange for tithing part of their sexually-driven income to purchase golden, diamond-encrusted anal beads for the pope? Maybe. There's no way of knowing for sure, and that's why we must relentlessly ask this question until we have the answer.

I walked past this piece of chilling artwork on my way to work today. Take a look.

You may notice that this artwork comes from the Vatican, and you are correct. But have you noticed that the grass is very green at the bottom of the painting? Hmm... Where else do we see green grass? Perhaps in spring time? Where have we heard that phrase before? How about "Spring time for HITLER in Germany," the song from the musical The Producers, which was adapted to a cinematic production featuring a gratuitous amount of overacting and starring Matthew Broderick. Is it just me, or does Matthew Broderick's name looks suspiciously like BARACK OBAMA? They probably even have the same middle name. Or do they? You may also notice that the film co-starred Nathan Lane, whose name can easily be rearranged to spell "Concentration Camp." Or can it? I don't know; I'm just here to ask questions.

Is this a coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe it isn't. Did Barack Obama travel back in time to commission every piece of artwork in the Vatican to link himself directly to Hitler as a way of testing our intellect? Was Barack Obama actually Hitler's grandfather? I'm not saying there isn't a chance.

America, we are in a situation right now. The situation that we are in is very serious. People are dying all over the world. You may have noticed that the days in America are getting shorter lately. I spilled coffee on my good pants this morning. Evolutionists are in our schools, teaching the religion of science to our children. Criminals are committing crimes. Prostitutes are prostituting. Society is unhinging at the seams. Clearly the end of times is near. Or maybe it's not. Is it? I'm just wondering.

How did we get into this situation that we are in? Is it corporate greed? The corporations? The companies that incorporated? Are we eating too many cheeseburgers? Or are we not eating enough? I don't have the answers to these questions, but I'll tell you who does: Jesus. Or does he? I'm just asking.

But I will tell you this. When Jesus received the Constitution from God at the top of Mount Vesuvius, as you may recall from your Sunday School classes, what did the preamble say? Did it say:

Dear Jesus,

Praise be to me, God. I have written for you a document called The Constitution, which you are to deliver to my chosen people, the Americans. When you carry the Pilgrims to Plymouth Rock on your fire dragon, don't forget to give this to them. Without The Constitution, America would come apart at the seams because the right to bear arms would be infringed. Without guns, we cannot truly live.

Also note that I totally exist and am not imaginary. If society gets into a situation, it may very well be due to 16% of them not believing in me. Other potential explanations may be that they are not praising me enough. Praise me. I need praise. Lots and lots of praise. Don't forget to tell them to oppress gay people!

Love,
God

Maybe it said that, maybe it didn't. I'm just asking. But if it did, then the answer to our dilemma would be obvious. So if you will excuse me, I have to go praise God and oppress gay people.

Or do I?

ATHEIST FINANCE: KNOW THYSELF!
We all like to think that we make decent use of our money. When it comes to our dollars, we think that we make rational decisions. But here's a hot, steaming slice of REALITY PIE for you to cram into your face: IT'S NOT TRUE! I'm going to slap you in the ass with two hypothetical situations directly from one of my Investments classes. Follow along and see how you fare.

Situation 1:
You have $1,000.00 on hand. I give you two options. Which do you choose?

Option A: Gain $500.00 for certain.
Option B: Gamble on a 50/50 chance to either gain $1,000.00 or gain nothing.

Got your answer? Good. Let's now look at situation 2!

Situation 2:
You have $2,000.00 on hand. I give you two options. Which do you choose?

Option A:
Lose $500.00 for certain.
Option B: Gamble on a 50/50 chance to either lose $1,000 or lose nothing.

Got your answer? FINE. Now let's analyze this bitch. If you are like most people you chose option A for situation 1 and option B for situation 2. But if we look at the end results, they are exactly the same for both situations. Option A will always end in $1,500.00, while option B will always end in a 50/50 chance of having either $1,000.00 or $2,000.00. So why the difference in choices?

It's simple! It comes down to a principle called diminishing marginal utility of wealth. What the fuck does that mean? All it means is that the more money you have, the less satisfaction (utility) each additional dollar gives. For example, if you're a billionaire and I offer to give you a dollar, you will probably say, "Go fuck yourself; I literally have one billion of those already." (Billionaires speak with semicolons.) But if you're a homeless dude, and I give you a dollar, your entire week will be made because of my amazing generosity. So the more money we have, the less satisfaction each additional dollar gives us.

Here's how this translates to the situation above. The principle of diminishing marginal utility of wealth applies to our everyday decisions by illustrating that we dislike monetary losses more than we like monetary gains, even if the loss and the gain are the same amount. So even if a situation would give us the exact same result as another situation, we approach it differently depending on whether it's a loss or a gain.

There's something to chew on. CHEW IT!

This doesn't belong in the Opinion section...IMO

Original article here:

By Jonathan Turley for The Washington Post
Sunday, November 15, 2009

""Suffer little children to come to me." So begins one of the most cited passages in the Bible. Yet, in cases involving the deaths of children in faith-healing families, the second half of Jesus's admonition from Luke 18:16 is at the heart of legal controversy: ". . . and forbid them not."

In the past 25 years, hundreds of children are believed to have died in the United States after faith-healing parents forbade medical attention to end their sickness or protect their lives. When minors die from a lack of parental care, it is usually a matter of criminal neglect and is often tried as murder. However, when parents say the neglect was an article of faith, courts routinely hand down lighter sentences. Faithful neglect has not been used as a criminal defense, but the claim is surprisingly effective in achieving more lenient sentencing, in which judges appear to render less unto Caesar and more unto God.

This disparate treatment was evident last month in Wisconsin, a state with an exemption for faith-based neglect under its child abuse laws. Leilani and Dale Neumann were sentenced for allowing their 11-year-old daughter, Madeline Kara Neumann, to die in 2008 from an undiagnosed but treatable form of diabetes. The Neumanns are affiliated with a faith-healing church called Unleavened Bread Ministries and continued to pray with other members while Madeline died. They could have received 25 years in prison. Instead, the court emphasized their religious rationale and gave them each six months in jail (to be served one month a year) and 10 years' probation.

During their sentencing, Marathon County Circuit Court Judge Vincent Howard said the Neumanns are "very good people raising their family who made a bad decision, a reckless decision." He then gently encouraged them to remember that "God probably works through other people, some of them doctors.""

The Real Power of Prayer

On November 5th, Major Nidal Malik Hasan entered his workplace at Fort Hood, Texas. He sat alone at a table for a few seconds, jumped on a table to yell “God is Great” in Arabic, then proceeded to pull out a semi-automatic pistol and revolver and began to open fire. By the time the bullets had fallen, 13 were dead and 30 injured.

No one is sure why Hasan did what he did. He was an Army psychologist, undoubtedly faced with the emotional strain of working with individuals who had seen and done horrendous things. He was soon to be deployed, and loathed the idea. He was the constant target of harassment for his Middle Eastern descent. No doubt, when and if the facts come out, it’s going to be a combination of all of these.

Yet, in the tragedy of this event, an important element is ignored - Hasan’s religion. He was a devout Muslim, claiming to be “a Muslim first and an American second.” While his colleagues were lecturing on how to treat soldiers, Hasan was presenting on suicide bombers and the Muslim faith. Later, he even allegedly told a Colonel “maybe Muslims should stand up and fight against the aggressor.”

So why does this matter? The Council on American-Islamic Relations has already condemned his actions; other Islamic groups have and will follow. Hasan will be labeled an extremist - but I don’t buy it. Perhaps the problem isn’t that Hasan was an extremist, but rather, that he took his faith quite seriously. And that, dear readers, is even more terrifying.

In 2005, a Danish newspaper published a blasphemous cartoon of Mohammad. The result was over 100 dead by the time the worldwide riots stopped. In 1988, Salman Rushdie published The Satanic Verses, a blasphemous book inspired by the life of Mohammad. Riots broke out soon after, Rushdie was the victim of multiple attempted murders, and translators of the book were targets of violence as well. And then there’s the violence that’s commonplace in many Islamic theocracies against women, homosexuals, and others. At some point, we have to examine if the religion itself is part of the problem.

All it takes is a cursory glance at the Qur'an to see the calls for violence. "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not." How should one fight? The Qur’an has that answered as well in verse 8:12. "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.” Later, there’s even a call to “fight with them until there is no more persecution and religion should be only for Allah."

While I’d never make the claim Hasan was soley motivated by his faith, how could this not contribute to an already unstable man?! This “religion of peace” makes at least 109 calls for violence throughout the Qur’an. The Islamic faith is part of the problem.

Already there are calls from pundits to purge the armed forces of all Muslims and those of Middle Eastern descent are already harassed. I do not condone either of these actions. I’ve always believed one should attack ideas and not people. That said, it’s time to end the apologetics for Islam. Not all Muslims support mass murderers - but it’s their holy text does. That’s the problem.

Lucas Hewitt, and so many others, have it all wrong...

This is a Facebook note from UNIFI member Darrin Sersland in response to Lucas Hewitt. As an aside, I'm never as proud to call myself the President of this organization as when members find an example of dangerous religious dogma and attack it (in droves) with reason. Occasionally I'll be caught off-guard with how well-thought and well-argued our members can be. This note was the epitome of that.

So, Lucas Hewitt, opinion columnist for the Northern Iowan, has written another opinion piece on atheists and atheism, apparently attempting to clarify the article he previously wrote. Allow me to try and make sense of this and put him and other people that share the same opinions as him in their place.

"My main point was to point out that in atheism there is no purpose or reason to live, that there is no obligation to do or live for anything."
- I know of no document or creed pertaining to atheism or non-believing that says any of the above. When I stopped believing in God in the 7th grade, I took no "oath" to accept these principles and apply them to my life. Wouldn't you think that if this was the case, more atheists would kill themselves since they, as Mr. Hewitt claimed, had no reason to live? In fact, suicide rates are higher among believers than those that don't believe. I have plenty of obligation to do things. And I do them for myself. I don't do them to "please" some imaginary in the sky. I also DON'T do things for myself. I do things for others, and often times without expecting or getting anything in return, not because the bible tells me so, but because it's humane.

"In the long run whatever you do is essentially meaningless since there is no design or purpose that anything was made for, and all will eventually come to nothing."
- Again, never took that oath out of the atheist bible. Everything we do has SOME purpose in life, I go to college and get a degree so I can be successful, knowledgable, and get a job that would provide a better means of living compared to a high school diploma. I mow my grandma's lawn because she is 74 years old, its the humane thing to do, and because her lawn would look like shit if I didn't. I didn't go out there on that 104 degree day while wearing my work clothes because it made me me stimulated or warm and fuzzy on the inside, but because it was humane. And I sure as f*** didn't do it for some invisible thing watching me in the sky. And, if you really think about it- if god is watching you all the time, doesn't he kind of sound like a creeper, or at least someone you would want the police to know about? The fact that I am getting a college degree and mowing grandma's lawn for god is absurd.

"When I said “purpose” I meant reason to live, some meant end that we are working towards. Since there is no creator and all living things are merely here by chance, there can be no desired purpose for anybody."
- I would like to think that that's not all we are trying to do in life is "get to the end". What about the stuff in the middle? What about the things in life that happen that give it it's proverbial "stuffing"? I can't think of a worse way to live your life- live it by a set of principles and requirements that are a few thousand years old, live by an invisible dictator, and hope it was all for the best in the afterlife. Live for now and live for yourself!

"Working your life for something – social justice, ending poverty, fighting world hunger – in the end won’t matter."
- No because atheists aren't out there giving money and time to fight world hunger, stop domestic violence, stop the spread of AIDs in Africa, or protect the environment. But I'll tell you what they are doing- they're killing abortion doctors, flying planes into buildings, and donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to spread hatred, bigotry, lies, and oppression through things like Proposition 8 in California.
Apparently donating your time and money to social causes only applies if God's name is somewhere on that check you hand in or the shirt that you wear while doing it.

"I would say choosing a goal like that is just to make yourself not feel worthless or without a reason to be alive, which inside of atheism is would be true."
- The only thing I have to say to that sentence is that it repesents typical Christian arrogance (or ignorance depending on your choice).

"What I meant by “What will be the point of not raping or murdering or stealing?” is not that since there is no Hell, then you should do anything but that if you want to then you could go ahead and do it and not be afraid of consequences."
- So just because I don't believe in god, I shouldn't be afraid of lethal injection, death by firing squad, the electric chair, etc.? Well that would pretty much make me immortal then, wouldn't it? Kind of like...well I won't say, you can probably figure it out. Expanding on that thought, this is a big beef I have when it comes to making law out of religious teachings and religious doctrine. I was listening to Chuck Grassley speak at UNI last fall and some chick had the nerve to raise her hand and ask the following question: "Do you think that the bible should be used when making laws". Lucky for her I didn't give her a piece of my mind when it was over with. So, we need an ancient book full of fairy tales to tell us not to murder or steal?! It's a slap in the face to ethics and morals- we as humans should know that murder and stealing are wrong, we don't need the book to tell us that, it should be one of those "duh" moments.

"Fifth, I must explain that I do not indeed understand all the things which I talked about."
- I would generally check to see that I, myself, understood a piece of my own writing before I submit it to be read by my peers. My CWR prof didn't teach me a lot but one key emphasis of his was being able to understand what you're writing about; because if you can't, then you can't expect your audience to be able to do it for you.

"I was taking atheism to its logical conclusion saying [sic] that there was no obligation to do good nor any purpose to our lives."
- Lucas, as you stated before, you clearly don't understand all the things in which you talk about. Let this be a learning experience for you and just quit before you dig yourself into a deeper hole.

"Remember, God does have a purpose for you: to glorify Him. The choice seems unquestionably clear."
- First off, Im glad all of this is being decided for me and I don't have a say in the matter, and I was under the impression that we all had free-will. And I'm glad the choice is unquestionably clear for you- yours if Christianity, and mine is not.

"Gay Catholic group urges D.C. to defy church"

By LOU CHIBBARO JR. for the Washington Blade

"The gay Catholic group Dignity USA is urging the D.C. City Council to reject a demand by the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington that it amend a pending same-sex marriage bill to allow its charitable arm to discriminate against gay employees.

Dignity weighed in on the brewing controversy over the city’s pending same-sex marriage bill after Catholic Charities, which is run by the Archdiocese, said it would discontinue operating dozens of city-funded programs that serve as many as 68,000 low-income people if the Council doesn’t make certain changes in the bill.

“It’s shameful of the church to put its dogmatic position above the needs of the needy people receiving these services,” said Marianne Duddy-Burke, Dignity USA’s executive director."

Blasphemy Friday: Cincinnati billboard relocated

The latest billboard in the United Coalition of Reason's atheist billboard campaign has been relocated due to threats against the owner of the property. The sign in Cincinnati is of the same harmless design as the ones used by the Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers in their bus campaign this summer.

I'll quote the article from the Cincinnati Enquirer:

“The situation indicates a need to continue the outreach in Cincinnati, said Shawn Jeffers of Hyde Park, co-coordinator for the local chapter [of the United Coalition of Reason].

"'It proves our point, that bigotry against people who don’t believe in a god is still very real in America,' he said in a news release. 'Only when we atheists, agnostics and humanists come together and go public about our views will people have a chance to learn that we too are part of the community and deserve respect.'"

The billboard campaign has been launched in 14 cities throughout the country, this is the only one that has had to be relocated.

Thursdays with Seth #5: RANT DAY!

WELCOME!
It's time for the 5th installment of Thursdays with Seth. This week, I, Seth Coster, finance director of UNIFI, have a few things I need to get off of my chest and into your face. Get your popcorn ready, bitches.

CATHOLIC BLACKMAIL!
My good buddy Nick Covington posted a link to this article on Facebook today. The basic premise:
The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.

Under the bill, headed for a D.C. Council vote next month, religious organizations would not be required to perform or make space available for same-sex weddings. But they would have to obey city laws prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians.
In other words, if they are forced to stop discriminating against a minority group, they will punish an unrelated group consisting of thousands of people. Hey, that sounds a lot like a fucking hostage situation! They are holding the well-being of about 60,000 D.C.-area poor people at ransom unless their demands are met. This is completely unsurprising, considering the Catholic Church has a history of being a bunch of total douchebags. Practically every freedom we have today has had to be won from the Catholic Church (or some closely related religious institution).

And the ironic part is that the poor are the most likely to be against same-sex marriage. As most of us know, people are less likely to be religious as they become more educated. And as people become less religious and more educated, they have a tendency to not be as big of assholes when it comes to treating other people with respect. So this total dick move is actually punishing the group of people who are statistically the most likely to be in support of the Catholic Church: the poor. I don't need to say much more about this, as the bullying and lack of compassion exhibited here are blatantly evident.

SAVE THE GAYS FROM THEMSELVES!
"If I saw someone unknowingly walking in front of oncoming traffic, and if it were in my power to stop them, I would save them without hesitation."

We can all agree with that statement. This was the message of compassion shared during Grab a Brew, Share Your View as some of us hung around afterward. However, this statement was presented as an analogy to explain why it is morally right to oppose gay marriage. By denying homosexuals basic rights, religious people claim that they are helping to prevent the homosexuals from being tormented in hell for eternity. I call bullshit. I am reminded of a quote that I chalked during Blasphemy day:

"You know your god is man-made when he hates all of the same people you do."
I can't remember who said it, but it's perfect.

Whether it is legal or not, gay people will still be gay. If we made it illegal for people to be taller than 6 feet, well, it wouldn't change a god-damned thing. People are what they are. Tall, short, gay, straight, black, white, whatever. Homosexuality isn't an action; it's a state of being. You can't change what someone is by trying to change what they do. If you force a tall person to duck down his whole life and pretend to be short, he'll just end up with back problems down the road, and he'll still just be a tall guy ducking.

One of the core arguments against homosexuality by religious bigots is that homosexuality is a choice. It is quickly becoming even more apparent that homosexuality isn't a choice, but even if it were, I have one question: SO WHAT? One's religion is a choice, and religious institutions get tax-exempt status!

Outlawing gay marriage is just one of many examples of religious institutions attempting to force society into following a code of immoral standards through bullying and fear-mongering. The laws of a society are determined by the morals of that society, not the other way around. People will soon wise up and realize that the "way things have always been done" hurts people and is completely immoral. As a culture, we are becoming more conscious of our actions, and we can't shrug off accountability much longer, no matter how hard religious institutions try to force us into it.

GOD HATES BABIES!
The discussion about homosexuality soon turned to the question of what happens to babies who die before they can accept Jesus. As we know, most Christians will declare that their god is all-loving and just, but the only way to get access to that love and justice is by accepting Jesus into one's heart. So what happens to babies?

This is where the Christian version of god terrifies me. Well, okay, the idea terrifies me all around, but this case is especially horrific. Let's consider an infant who dies shortly after childbirth. Thinking back to the idea of saving someone from oncoming traffic, here we have an all-powerful god who had the ability to prevent the death of the baby in the first place. Being all-powerful, he could have saved the child with no effort whatsoever, yet he did nothing. Not only does the child then die, the parents and family suffer from emotional trauma.

But it doesn't stop there! Even though God could have saved the child but didn't, the child must now be judged. But wait! God has decided that unless someone accepts Jesus into his heart, he cannot be forgiven for his original sin, which stems from that one time when Eve ate that apple that God could have just not put in the fucking garden in the first place. So God sits back and watches the baby be born with some sort of problem, and then he sits back still and watches the baby die. So how does God judge the baby?

The obvious answer: God sends the baby to hell to be tortured for all eternity to repent for its sins (of being born).

As a Christian, you may disagree with this statement. However, you would be hard pressed to reconcile your disagreement with your scripture. After all, we are all born as atheists, and all atheists go to hell. Period. There is no wiggle room. I get told that quite regularly.

So then how do you have an all-loving god who allows babies to be born with problems, allows them to suffer, allows them to die, and then demands they be tortured for all time? You can't. When it comes down to it, the Christian version of god is not all-loving; he is all-asshole. He is omni-douchebag. He is a dick. He has the power to end all suffering in the world through no effort of his own, being all-powerful, and further, he could reveal himself to anyone at any time to save that person from going to hell. Yet he sits back and does literally nothing. Immoral? You bet! I am thankful, though, that if God did exist, I would have drastically higher moral standards than he would.

FACTS CAN ONLY BE TRUE IF I LIKE THEM!
The great thing about reality is that it doesn't care what we think of it. Things just happen, and whether we accept it or not, the world just keeps on keeping on. The goal of science is to figure out how and why these things happen so that we can better our existence through a greater understanding of our environment. So we ask questions. A lot of questions. Sometimes, the answers to those questions make us uncomfortable.

For instance, it was once thought that the Earth was the center of the solar system. Everything had to rotate around the Earth, we thought, because we were very important. Plus, it just looked like that. Unfortunately, we were slightly off. Not only is the Earth not the center of the solar system, it is not even remotely close to the center of anything at all. We sit at the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy, which hangs out at the edge of the universe, off in some far-off corner. We are sitting on a tiny speck that is one of trillions in the known universe. If the entire Earth were to explode right now, in the grand scheme of things, nothing would change.

In the history of Earth, modern humans have been around for about 150,000 years. The Earth has been around for 4.5 billion years. Our species has only been around for .003% of the time the Earth has existed. What I'm driving at is that we don't really matter to the rest of the universe. We are a blink in time. Does that make us uncomfortable? Maybe. Does our uncomfortability discount the facts? Nope! No matter how much we don't like it, that doesn't make it any less true.

However, some people would disagree. One of those people is Lucas Hewitt, opinion columnist for the Northern Iowan. As a Christian, he has published an article about atheism, and he has another on the way. In his first article, he explains that if "atheistic evolution" is true (that no gods exist), we have no reason to live. He therefore concludes that, if we have no reason to live, we should just do whatever gives us the most satisfaction as soon as possible before we die. He then explains that the things that give us the most satisfaction are rape, murder, and theft. His conclusion starts with, "But the good news is that it isn’t true!" And then he starts talking about how God gives Christians purpose, because the purpose of being a Christian is to worship and glorify God.

Oh, thank you, Lucas! After the past 150 years of scientific research, with evidence piling up all around us and with thousands upon thousands of scientists in agreement that evolution is a real, natural process, finally someone has the balls to just throw it all out the window with a flippant comment! I'm glad you have taken the time to really do your research, take a stand, and defend it with real, hard, evidence. Now we can stop wasting all this time trying to understand the world around us, and we can finally put our efforts back into mentally fellating our egotistical imaginary friend with self-image issues.

Sarcasm aside, this article was pathetic. It completely misrepresented both evolution and atheism in such an obvious and stupid way that a four-year-old wouldn't be convinced by it. Luckily, we get to look forward to Lucas's next article coming out tomorrow, where he follows up this last one with even more stupid comments, such as this one:
I was accused of writing that people only do good to receive award and to avoid punishment. I do not and did not support this view. What I meant by “What will be the point of not raping or murdering or stealing?” is not that since there is no Hell, then you should do anything but that if you want to then you could go ahead and do it and not be afraid of consequences. There is no obligation to do good if you don’t feel like it.
I'll let you sift through that and figure out how ridiculous it is.

But what it comes down to is that Lucas has rejected the facts of reality on the basis of one condition alone: they make him uncomfortable. I have some news. Our existence is an uncomfortable one. We are here and then we're gone, and probably nothing we do will have consequences beyond our own solar system, which is nothing but a microscopic speck in the universe. We are the Whos in Horton Hears a Who. But just because we are insignifcant does not mean that we should treat each other badly, as Lucas suggests. A person's a person, no matter how small.

Bill O'Reilly: "We can't kill all the Muslims"

I can't believe this didn't come up last night...

Good call, Bill: diplomacy is always a great backup plan.

As an aside, do you (the reader, not Bill O'Reilly) really think this was a terrorist attack, or just a crazy Muslim that killed some people?

Catholicism vs. Scientology

(Picture not entirely relevant, just hilarious)

I found this link on reddit's atheism page. Apparently, the Catholics are pretty miffed about the Sea Org, an organization of members within Scientology who sign a billion year contract with Tom and Xenu. It has come to the church's attention that apart from the gross violations of labor laws that are reported by ex-members, it is standard procedure for pregnant women to be strongly encouraged to have an abortion so that the child doesn't interfere with the higher calling of the mother (or place an additional burden on her bank account).

Now the Catholics are calling for a full government investigation of Scientology, and a re-examination of its tax-exempt status. Of course, personally I think both institutions should be paying taxes, and that the Catholic church has little room to talk of ethical breaches (or is it breeches?). Part of me would like to see an all-out war of lawsuits here...one can always hope that the money that would be otherwise spent on oppressing homosexuals could instead be used to pay legal fees.

"I know the dark side of Scientology...I almost lost my friend to it"

Written for Herald Scotland by Jonny Jacobsen:

"I knew Scientology was in trouble when the media moved on from the usual silly gossip about its celebrity members to much darker, disturbing issues at the heart of the movement.

After a Paris court last month convicted several Scientologists and two organisations associated with the movement in France of organised fraud, and amid other investigations in France looking at a suicide and an alleged abduction, Oscar-winning film-maker Paul Haggis, a long-time member, quit Scientology.

Haggis, who wrote and directed Crash, denounced the practice of "disconnection", which sees members forced to cut off contact with anyone – even their loved ones – if they are deemed an enemy of Scientology.

In Edinburgh in the early 1990s, I found out just what the practice of disconnection could do to ordinary people when a close friend became involved in Scientology. It was an experience which marked me so profoundly that I have been tracking the movement ever since."

"Wilson isn't one of those evasive Christians who mumble apologetically about how some of the Bible stories are really just "metaphors." He is willing to maintain very staunchly that Jesus of Nazareth was the Christ and that his sacrifice redeems our state of sin, which in turn is the outcome of our rebellion against God. He doesn't waffle when asked why God allows so much evil and suffering—of course he "allows" it since it is the inescapable state of rebellious sinners. I much prefer this sincerity to the vague and Python-esque witterings of the interfaith and ecumenical groups who barely respect their own traditions and who look upon faith as just another word for community organizing. (Incidentally, just when is President Barack Obama going to decide which church he attends?)" - Christopher Hitchens from the Slate article posted above.

"Seattle resident 'offended' and 'disturbed' by 'cruel' atheist bus ads"

From the Atheism Examiner by Trina Hoaks:

"In a "Letter to the Editor" that appeared on The Seattle Times Web site on Friday, a Seattle resident laments about the latest atheist bus ads (shown above) that have been placed on Seattle buses by the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF).

It seems that Carol J. Lundemo was "offended and disturbed" when she saw several Seattle buses sporting the ad. She sees the ad as a "perversion of the original 1897 newspaper reply by Francis P. Church to 8-year-old Virginia, who inquired as to the reality of Santa."

She also believes that the ads are a "completely unnecessary, cruel advertisement campaign." She also refers to FFRF as "selfish" because they spent the money to run the ads.

The most interesting part of her letter is her finger wagging at FFRF for using the money they used for the ads so frivolously. Apparently, this is a clear indication that FFRF does not "value humans." If they did, they would have used the money for something more worthwhile like serving the less fortunate members of the community, like Christian organizations do. She said, "Oh wait, those agencies I mentioned that care about and help people are Christian organizations."

Of course, we know that all of Christian money goes to help the less fortunate. They would never spend any of their funds frivolously. We should recall the millions of dollars that were spent on California's Prop 8 by religious proponents of the measure. That was certainly helpful to the less fortunate. (Talk about being "offended!")

While we are at it, why don't we consider the estimated $1 billion plus that has been paid out by Catholics to settle and (in some instances) cover up sex abuse cases. These child sex offenders and those who covered their rears sure are caring. (Talk about being "disturbed!")

Talk about "cruel!"

I could go on, but won't.

What is that they say about those who live in glass houses? At least the glass house in which FFRF resides only cost a few thousand dollars, which, when compared to the glass houses of the religious, seems like chump change.

Incidentally, there are many atheist groups and individuals around the nation (and the world) working to help in their communities. That Ms. Holier Than Thou, er, Lundemo doesn't seem to realize this does not mean that it isn't happening."

Blasphemy Friday: Transsexual Jesus Sparks Protests

I just found this awesome link for Blasphemy Friday! There is a festival in Scotland called Glasgay! The article describes Glasgay! as "a celebration of Scotland's gay, bi-sexual and transsexual culture." Naturally, when the LGBT community gets together en masse, there are some interesting goings on. In this case, a transsexual playwright named Jo Clifford wrote a play called "Jesus, Queen of Heaven" depicting Jesus as a transsexual. Tim Curry would be proud!

Naturally, Christians in the area are furious. They staged a protest outside the theatre where the staging took place, holding candles and signs that said things like, "Jesus, King of Kings, Not Queen of Heaven" or "God: My Son is Not a Pervert."

Said one pastor: "You can't blaspheme God and use freedom of speech as an excuse for that."

Says UNIFI: Why not?

Thursdays with Seth #4

TOO BADASS!
This week's Thursday with Seth post is too badass to explain, aside from the fact that I have added a new feature (red headings), so I have opted to add a soundtrack to set the mood.

Mood has been set to "badass." Please continue.

COFFEE ANUS!

Have you ever drank a cup (or two) of coffee and soon felt the need to poop? That's because one of the side-effects (or plain effects) of caffeine is a relaxation of the anal sphincter! Perhaps this is just Jesus's way of striking back at the coffee guzzling, capitalist peons of corporate America for their materialist greed. Take that, assholes!

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!
If you say "ladies and gentlemen" to a group of hermaphrodites, you are technically correct.

FACILITATE SYNERGIZING OUTSIDE THE BOX TO IMPLEMENT SOLUTIONS!
One of the benefits of the information age is the ability to expose BS wherever it can be found. One pile of BS that irritates the holy hell out of me is jargon. You know, those meaningless words that are thrown around in various fields. Science, philosophy, business... they are all packed with jargon. And sometimes it's so excessive that it would be hilarious if it wasn't so depressing. The business world is the worst offender.

I received an email from the UNI Economics department with a job offer from a local company for new graduates of the UNI Business School. The job: PRODUCT ANALYST. For those not familiar with business jargon, I have taken the liberty to translate the job requirements:
  • Support product management to ensure the successful implementation of strategic and tactical business solutions
    • Make sure the people in charge have an adequate supply of coffee.
  • Assist in evaluating and implementing product changes by providing data analysis and reporting (new, routine, and ad hoc reports and analyses).
    • Stay out of the way. And bring me that report from Steve's cubicle.
  • Plan, organize, and manage work to continuously improve the benefit design and filing process.
    • Organize our filing cabinet that hasn't been touched since 1978.
  • Work with product management and partnering teams in providing product content for marketing, member relations, and sales materials.
    • Take this box of brochures over to our marketing department.
  • Ensure data integrity among various internal groups and/or between internal and external sources for assigned product segments.
    • Look at two spreadsheets and make sure the numbers match.
  • Support short-term operational activities.
    • Show up to work.
  • Assist in facilitating the delivery of cross-functional special projects or initiatives in a matrix organization.
    • Get more coffee.
Remember, if it seems like it says nothing, it is probably because... it says nothing.

GOOGLE LOVES FREE SPEECH!
I recently stumbled upon a glorious invention from Google: Google SideWiki. I would explain it, but this video should do the trick!

This little plugin for your web browser attaches a user-controlled comments section to every web page on the internet. People can write comments, and those comments can be rated up or down by other users. This removes web sites' authors' ability to censor people on their own sites. Anyone can say anything they want about any web site! The content on the Sidewiki is only moderated by the readers of the sidewiki -- they can rate comments up or down in terms of usefulness. So People posting things like "LOLSUCKNOOB" will quickly have their comments whisked away, while people with more informed views will be able to keep their comments up. Here are a few examples of some sidewiki entries:

Ray Comfort's blog:
"With people like this arguing for Christianity, who needs to argue against it?"
- Posted by Eric Hughes (Votes: 1 useful, 0 not useful)

Conservapedia:
"Great website! More reliable than Wikipedia."
- Posted by Ryan V. (Votes: 0 useful, 2 not useful)

Facebook:
"Hate having your Facebook Newsfeed filled up with notifications about the latest quiz or other app your friends are obsessed with? Short of un-friending them, you can quickly hide an app so that it never again shows in your newsfeed. Just hover your mouse to the right of the newsfeed entry and you'll see a link that says "Hide." Click on it and you'll get a choice of hiding all entries from the friend (but they still remain your friend) or hiding that app. To make the notifications of a friend or an app reappear, just go to the bottom of your newsfeed."
- Posted by Mark Traphagen (Votes: 72 useful, 6 not useful)

So we can see that SideWiki can easily become a conduit for useful information. The only problem right now is that it seems to not be gaining much ground. Unlike Wikipedia, which has millions of users, SideWiki has not been promoted, and few people know about it. A lack of posts on some sites has caused posts like Ryan V's Conservapedia post to stay up, though Google adds a disclaimer that when there are few posts, the information may be "less than useful."

Spread the word, and start SideWiki-ing!

The Problem of Hell and a Loving God

This is a video by youtube user cdk007 covering the topic we discussed last night and last Tuesday with Matt Reisetter at Navs. Now as I've been hearing for the last two weeks, "every analogy breaks down at some point," but I am rather fond of the one used in this video.

Atheistic Evolution?

Today's Northern Iowan brought a new op-ed from Lucas Hewitt. You may recognize his name as the freshman author of other op-eds on why prayer works and how to accept Jesus into your life. As awful as those were, his article today takes things to a new level. He wants to share with you why "atheistic evolution" means there's no reason not to partake in "raping or murdering or stealing."
Humans are no better than a rat or dragonfly. You and all other living things are simply sacks of chemicals. In evolution no one organism takes precedence over another. This is the essence of survival of the fittest. If there is a weak human, he should be left to die for the good of the race.
Oh, Mr. Hewitt, you don't seem to understand what you're talking about. Evolution is fact. It's existence is not contingent upon it's moral qualms. It's demonstratably true, regardless of what you think about it.

Richard Dawkins has made this point and I agree with him: a society based on Darwinian principles would NOT be a good society. Evolution shows what happens in nature to living organisms. It has no moral viewpoint nor can it. We, as humans, use our logic and reason to decide what makes a good society. To most, a good society is one that takes care of the weak, the poor, and the sick - regardless of what would happen to them if they were left alone in nature.

And by the way, what does "atheistic" evolution even mean? I hope Mr. Hewitt realizes the Catholic Church, among other denominations, accepts evolution as true and compatible with their religious views.

Here's the Northern Iowan story.
Here's Lucas' Facebook note.
Here's where you can send a letter to the editor.

Lets not let this molestation of science go unaddressed.

Ray Comfort joins the UNIFI Bandwagon

As if getting mentioned by PZ Myers wasn't enough for the day, Ray Comfort joined the party in noticing UNIFI as well. Comfort, of the "Atheist Nightmare" fame, came across the Northern Iowan's coverage of Blasphemy Day and decided to post about it.

Not only does he condemn the day, but he calls on the University to sanction UNIFI as well:

I’m not concerned about the childish acts of the atheists. What concerns me is the blatant hypocrisy of the university in allowing such juvenile behavior. I'm concerned, but not surprised.
Comment at your own risk...

UNI Makes Pharyngula!

PZ Myers made a shout-out today to UNI Biology department on his blog Pharyngula. You can check it out at http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2009/11/hello_university_of_northern_i.php#comments.

He was also considerate enough to give a plug for his visit to UNI, coming in February.
