Ray Comfort joins the UNIFI Bandwagon

As if getting mentioned by PZ Myers wasn't enough for the day, Ray Comfort joined the party in noticing UNIFI as well. Comfort, of the "Atheist Nightmare" fame, came across the Northern Iowan's coverage of Blasphemy Day and decided to post about it.

Not only does he condemn the day, but he calls on the University to sanction UNIFI as well:

I’m not concerned about the childish acts of the atheists. What concerns me is the blatant hypocrisy of the university in allowing such juvenile behavior. I'm concerned, but not surprised.

Can you imagine the outcry if a university (under the guise of freedom of speech) allowed students to have a "Black Day International Event," where white students, with the blessing of authorities, spent the day chalking the sidewalks with the "n" word and other racial slurs?

There is a stark contrast between attacking someone based on their race as opposed to mocking someone who, for instance, attempts to disprove evolution by taking a monkey out to dinner, on a plane, etc. in order to spread their beliefs (wish I had a quick link to Ray and Kirk's Evolution Zone--it's a hoot). To compare the two is, much like Comfort's tactics, dishonest at the very least. By the way, kudos on sneaking "International" in there to manufacture a broader scope of outrage; if you're gonna build a strawman, might as well make him huge, right?

I did not take part in the Blasphemy Day "festivities," and I neither approved or disapproved of the chalking--from either side of the religious fence. What I do disapprove of is how people can still say that they believe in free speech yet in the very same breath selectively vilify those who wrote something they deemed offensive. It's a little sad to see how many don't seem to recognize the hypocrisy.

Mr. Comfort, I have to say that I disapprove of your constant attempts to fabricate untruths and spin lies, but you, like those here on UNI's campus, should have the freedom to do so without fear of being silenced. In the same token, I have the freedom to help educate those you would drag down to your level of anti-intellectualism so that we can all mock you with hearty guffaws.

Have a banana, Doofus.
